Artist Statement & Biography
I live in Iowa, I have two amazing sons Drew and Nick. My sons frequently appear in my work, as my favorite subject matter for my paintings. I continue to sculpt, draw and paint in my free time, my most frequently used media are clay and mixed media acrylic. I love experimenting with new techniques and finding ways to incorporate texture into my work. I have the best job in the world, teaching high school artists how to draw, paint and sculpt. I love teaching others to discover their own artistic abilities. In 2016, I began a new adventure as a book illustrator with my first book, "Ornery Henry" written by Molly Giese. My artwork has always been very narrative, influenced by the people and interactions in my life. Book illustration has become a natural fit and my newest passion. I illustrated two more books, "When We Hold Hands" and "The Morning Troll."
I graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor’s degree in Art and K-12 teaching certification in 2000. I began teaching art in the East Central and Delwood School Districts that fall. I obtained a Masters of Education and Leadership Degree from Drake University in 2003. Since 2006, I have been teaching art in my home town at Central DeWitt Community School District. At Central I have held several leadership positions including: Model Teacher and Professional Development Facilitator. I have also been a presenter several times at Central's Technology and Innovation Conferences. In my positions I have taught art at all levels. I earned National Board Certification in Art EAYA in 2010. I re-certified with the National Board’s Maintenance of Certification in 2019 ART EAYA. I also score for Pearson, National Board Art Certificates. In 2022 I was selected as one of 15 National Visual Art Teacher Leaders for the National Art Educator Association's Connected Arts Network 5 year project and action research.
My work has been displayed locally at the First Central State Bank Gallery and Whisk Away Café as a featured artist. I have also displayed my art in collaborative shows at the Figge Salon and Clinton Community College Instructor Shows. I have participated in collaborative projects such as the 100 Cellos and "Our Collective Dream" MLK mural in the Quad Cities. I also am listed in the QC Arts artist index. In 2023, I opened my own studio in DeWitt, Iowa.
