COURSE CONTENT:

This course has been designed for students interested in submitting a portfolio to be reviewed in the AP Drawing Portfolio Exam or AP 2-D Design Portfolio Exam.  All course content meets the requirements stated in the exam poster.  Through individualized and direct instruction, emphasis will be placed on the production of quality artwork.  Students will address all three sections of the portfolio: Breadth, Concentration, and Quality.

The students will be challenged to create original mastery of concept, composition, and the execution of their personal ideas and themes.  The students will investigate and critique their work as it develops, making critical decisions and refining their problem solving abilities.  The students are expected to create a comprehensive portfolio that addresses each of these issues in a creative and personally unique way.

LEARNING: ACTIVITIES & STRATEGIES:

•Units of study are designed to satisfy the Breadth requirement of each portfolio.  Students will work from a variety of mediums, techniques and approaches in drawing to develop concepts and creative ideas.

•Critiques and displays of personal work are ongoing.  The students are expected to participate in class critiques of their personal work as well as the work of their peers and master artists.  The vocabulary of art will be used to engage in written and verbal critiques of these works of art.

•Individual student critiques will help students learn to analyze and discuss their own work and artwork of peers.  These critiques will also keep students focused on rigorous personal goals.

•Individual conferencing will help the students in the development of their Concentration work.  Students will develop a body of work that is an investigation of an idea or theme that is of personal interest to them.

•Ongoing instructional conversations with the teacher will help students develop their artwork, find strengths and weakness in the images, and provide feedback on how they can further develop their skills and artwork.  This will also help students learn to analyze and discuss their own artworks and artwork by their peers.

•Students will also present their artwork and portfolios to several post secondary institutions and explore career options.

•Class discussions about artistic integrity and plagiarism will ensure clarity and understanding for all students.  Students’ portfolios will develop from observation.  The use of published photographs and the work of other artists is plagiarism, and will not be tolerated.

•Understand artistic integrity, as well as what constitutes plagiarism, as it applies to their work in drawing and 2-D art.

•Be presented with historical, contemporary and contextual drawing references.

•Achieve quality in the completion of assignments they demonstrate:

- Confident use of design such as: composition, focal point, and use of space.

-  Meaningful and personal responses to stated assignment criteria.

- Mastery of a variety of materials.

- Sensitive visual response to a variety of techniques.

- A range of successful and purposeful image development strategies from observation, memory and fantasy sources.  No published sources will be accepted.

Percent scores will be based on rubrics for individual assignments.

Midterm 5 slides total, term end 10 slides total

TERM 2- DECEMBER, JANUARY, & FEBRUARY:

Overview:

Breadth work may continue to develop but the main focus of this term will be the development of the personal imagery as defined in the portfolio section Sustained Investigation.  Considerable time will be devoted to defining and describing successful approaches to the highly personal nature of Concentration.  Assignments will be individual and group designed.  Students are individually counseled about their choices of plan for a Concentration study.  By term end, students will not only have completed a significant portion of the Concentration pieces in the Sustained Investigation, but also have completed a written statement describing the intent and development of the project in accurate artistic language.

The students will:

•Develop a working definition of what constitutes an acceptable and successful Concentration.  Students will meet with the teacher to discuss appropriate goals and plan for their ideas.

•Be assisted in discovery and defining their strengths and interests.

•Receive guidance in planning a sequence of action for individual pieces.

•Achieve quality pieces that demonstrate:

-a sense of pursuit in visual problem solving:

-the creation of a related body of work with an underlying theme;

- all pieces are relevant to the study;

- progression through discovery, active problem solving and invention;

-appropriate choice of materials and techniques successfully linked with ideation development.

* Begin the written statement by forming an individual plan of action and journaling.

* Make reference to at least one artist that has some relationship to section II work.

* Sequence work to best development of the body of work.

* Identify the opening piece in the presentation sequence.

* Plan continuation of study.

* Understand that writing informs the work and work informs the written statement.

Percent scores will be based on rubrics for individual assignments.

Midterm 15 slides total, term end 20 slides total

TERM 3- MARCH, APRIL AND MAY:

This term will be devoted to the final preparation for the AP Drawing or AP 2-D or 3D Portfolio.  Students will receive individual mentoring regarding their selection and portfolio.  The students will continue to develop work that demonstrates invention, personal direction/voice, and thoughtful decision-making for the Sustained investigation Section.  Projects will encourage risk taking and production for the final pieces of Concentration.  Individual conferences will be scheduled to discuss Quality and Sustained Investigation Concentration sections of the portfolio.  Weak work will be identified and remedied.

Students will:

•Evaluate all work that is intended for the final portfolio and carefully consider the inclusion of any pieces completed prior to the course or completed outside the instructional offering of the course.

•Follow instruction regarding best practice for sequencing and labeling slides for section II & III.
